How many tables do you need for 100 or 150 guests? (60" and 72" rounds, 6 ft and 8 ft tables)
By Blink Brief · Updated · How pages are made
At 8 guests per 60-inch round table, 100 guests need 13 tables and 150 guests need 19. At 10 per 72-inch round, they need 10 and 15. Divide your guest count by the seats per table and round up, then add 1 table if couples and families must sit together, because whole households rarely fill every seat.
Short answer
- 100 guests: 13 tables of 60 inches (8 each), 10 of 72 inches (10 each), or 13 tables of 8 ft (8 each).
- 150 guests: 19 tables of 60 inches, 15 of 72 inches, or 19 tables of 8 ft.
- 200 guests: 25 tables of 60 inches, 20 of 72 inches, or 25 tables of 8 ft.
- Before you divide: take the guests at a head or sweetheart table out of the count. After you divide, add 1 spare table if households must stay together.
How many people fit at each table size
Rental companies give a range for each table, and they don't all agree. "Comfortable" below is the lower number most of them give; "tight" is the most they list. Party Rental Ltd. says to "allow 24–30 inches of space per guest for comfortable seating," and Hill Country Event Rentals that "actual seating capacity may vary depending on chair style, place settings, and event layout." So ask your own rental company or venue for its number, in writing.
| Table | Comfortable | Tight | What the sources say |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60-inch round (5 ft) | 8 | 10 | Party Rental Ltd. 8–10; Hill Country 6–8; Giggster 8, maximum 10 |
| 66-inch round | 9 | 11 | Party Rental Ltd. 9–11; the others don't list it |
| 72-inch round (6 ft) | 10 | 12 | Party Rental Ltd. 10–12; Hill Country 8–10; Giggster 10, maximum 12 |
| 6 ft rectangular | 6 (3 per side) | 8 (1 at each end) | Party Rental Ltd. and Hill Country 6–8; Poppy 6–8, but as 3–4 per side, not with end seats |
| 8 ft rectangular | 8 (4 per side) | 10 (1 at each end) | Party Rental Ltd. and Hill Country 8–10; Giggster 8, maximum 10; Poppy 8–10 as 4–5 per side, not with end seats, and 10–12 (5–6 per side) for an 8 ft farm table |
| Cocktail table, 30–36 inches | 4 standing | 6 standing | Giggster 4, maximum 6; Hill Country 2–4 |
From each company's own page, read on 3 November 2026. Hill Country Event Rentals lists every round table at 2 seats fewer than Party Rental Ltd. does.
Tables for 50 to 200 guests, worked out
Guests ÷ seats per table, rounded up. 150 guests at 8 a table is 18.75, so 19 tables; the last one seats 6. Enter your own numbers here, or read them from the tables below.
Work out your tables and chairs
2 for a sweetheart table, 0 for none.
It divides and rounds up in this page; nothing you type leaves it. The 10% extra chairs follow Giggster's advice.
To work it out by hand:
- Take the guests at a head or sweetheart table away from the guest count.
- Divide the rest by the seats per table and round up: that's your guest tables.
- Add 1 table if couples and families must sit together.
- Order 1 chair per guest. Giggster suggests 10% more for last-minute guests and damaged chairs.

Guest tables only, before a spare table and without a head table. Giggster gives the same counts for 100, 150 and 200 guests at 60-inch rounds of 8, and Poppy the same for 150 guests.
Rectangular and long tables
A 6 ft table seats 3 per side and an 8 ft table 4 per side. Each takes 1 more guest at each end: Hill Country Event Rentals plans 8 guests at a 6 ft table as "3 on each side and 1 at each end," and 10 at an 8 ft table as "4 on each side and 1 at each end."
- Long rows lose the middle ends. Tables pushed end to end keep only the 2 ends of the whole row. A row of five 8 ft tables seats 5 × 8 + 2 = 42.
- 150 guests at long rows: 4 rows of five 8 ft tables seat 168, so 20 tables in all. Three rows seat only 126.
- Check the table's width. Party Rental Ltd. lists 8 ft tables at 30, 36 and 42 inches wide, all for 8 to 10 guests. Poppy lists an 8 ft farm table at 10 to 12 (5 to 6 per side), more than any rental company page above; ask your rental company before you plan 12.
Keep households together: why you need a spare table
A table of 8 fits a household of 5 and one of 3, or two of 4. A 5 and a 4 don't fit together, and a table that ends at 7 leaves a seat no household fills. 13 tables of 8 give 100 guests only 4 spare seats. Once 5 tables end at 7, those tables hold 35 guests, the other 8 tables hold at most 64, and 1 guest of the 100 has no seat: a family splits or someone moves.
One more table gives the households room to fit. If your venue can't take another table, seat at 9 or 10 per round instead, or decide yourself which big family splits across 2 neighbouring tables.
The free Seating Chart tool fills in the number of tables from your guest count and seats per table, seats each household at one table, and lists every household it had to split. Add a table and press "Re-assign everyone" to try again. It runs in your browser, so your guest list isn't uploaded. How to turn your guest list into a seating chart covers the spreadsheet set-up.
Cocktail tables for a standing reception
Giggster's rule is "1 cocktail table per 10-12 guests at a standing reception." For 100 guests that is 9 to 10 tables, and for 150 guests 13 to 15. A 30 to 36 inch cocktail table holds 4 standing guests comfortably and 6 at most, by Giggster's numbers; Hill Country Event Rentals says 2 to 4.
If dinner follows in another room or the same tables are reset, the cocktail tables are extra to the dinner tables, not part of the count.
Questions
How many round tables do I need for 100 guests?
13 tables of 60 inches at 8 guests each, or 10 tables of 72 inches at 10 each. Add 1 table if couples and families must sit together, and leave the guests at a head or sweetheart table out of the count.
How many 8 ft tables do I need for 150 guests?
19 tables at 8 guests each (4 per side), or 15 at 10 each if you also seat 1 guest at each end. Tables joined end to end lose their end seats, so a row of joined tables seats 8 per table plus 2.
How many people fit at a 60 inch round table?
8 comfortably and 10 tightly. Party Rental Ltd. lists 8 to 10, Hill Country Event Rentals 6 to 8, so ask your own rental company for its number.
How many people sit at a 6 foot table?
6, with 3 on each side, or 8 with 1 more at each end. Party Rental Ltd. and Hill Country Event Rentals both list 6 to 8.
